• Why do you want a bird?

  • Have you researched the species that you want?

  • Do you know that birds are wild animals and not domesticated?

  • Are you aware that it’s not a matter of if the bird bites but when it’s going
    to bite?

  • Even the tamest bird can and will bite at some point.

  • Do you know that a whole raw diet with sprouts is necessary as well as pellets?

Are you aware that this is a lifelong commitment?
  • Do you know that every time a bird goes from one house to another to another it gets traumatized?

  • Do you know that birds choose their people and not the other way around?

  • Do you know that most parrots will outlive us so preparations must be made in advance?

Do you know that avian vets are expensive?
  • Do you know birds need at least an annual checkup?

  • Are you aware that some birds carry zoonotic diseases and you won’t know unless you bring it to an avian vet and ask for the specific disease testing before bringing it into your home?

  • Do you know that birds hide their illnesses to avoid being easy prey? So if they look a little sick, you have to RUN to the vet before it’s too late.

step one

Ask yourself these questions . . . and be sure you know the answers
Private parties and backyard breeders
  • There are ones who pretend to be rescues but aren’t. They look for free birds to flip for profit. If it’s a simple transaction, that’s likely the case.

  • While it could be ok to get an unvetted parrot, please demand the truth so you know your risks and can be proactive with the parrot's medical assessment and care.

  • If you choose this route, we can provide advice on what to ask, what’s legal, and what’s not so you can make informed, educated decisions.

Stores and rescues
  • Verify that you’re dealing with a legitimate rescue organization through Sunbiz.org and it says it’s ACTIVE and it’s a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

  • A legitimate rescue will provide vetting documentation.

  • If the store or rescue only did minimum testing, we strongly urge you to run a new set of tests along with a complete wellness checkup.

Parrots Haven Rescue
  • All birds we adopt go home fully vetted, disease tested, and on a healthy diet.

  • We get to know the birds’ personalities for a perfect match with their adopters and their new home environment.

  • We ensure that the birds entrusted to us will have the best possible chance for a happy long life.

  • The true mission of rescuing is preparing the birds (physically and mentally) to thrive with their new human family.
