tips and tidbits

Choosing the right parrot
  • Consider size, lifespan, noise level, and personality of different parrot species.

  • A parrot’s cage should be large enough for them to move around freely and should include perches, toys, and a food bowl.

  • Good toys offer chewing, foraging, puzzle-solving, and climbing that help keep a parrot entertained and stimulated.

If you find a bird
it’s NOT finders keepers
  • You’re not obligated to surrender a bird to a rescue but may contact the humane unit or a rescue for advice.

  • However, you must actively look for the rightful owner just as a rescue or a city agency would for at least 90 days.

  • We can provide temporary cages while you look for the owner.

  • Ask for guidance. Don’t sell, gift, rehome or let anyone do it even if they claim to be a rescue.

When you adopt a bird
  • If there’s an exchange of money or anything of value, you do NOT have to return the bird to said rescue as birds are considered property and you paid for it.

  • If you pay, it’s considered a sale even if you sign a “homemade” adoption contract.

  • The Psittacoidea are the “true” parrots, which includes the macaws, lorikeets and budgerigars.

  • The Cacatuoidea superfamily consists of the cockatoos.

  • The Strigopoidea superfamily consists of the New Zealand parrots, such as the kea, kākā, and kākāpō.

tidbits

Parrots are known for their intelligence, mimicry, and long lifespans, but also for being potentially noisy and requiring a commitment from owners.

Parrots eat with their feet
before you judge, remember people eat
with their fingers (when no one’s looking)

When most people think about how birds eat, they envision a parrot picking up food with its beak. However, parrots actually use their feet to eat. Parrots have extremely strong legs and feet that they use to grasp and hold food up to their beak while they eat.

Family values
parrots tend to stay with a single mate

Parrots are capable of forming loving relationships with one another, similar to humans. When a female and male parrot form a special bond, they tend to stay together for life, even outside of breeding seasons.

There are almost 400 species of parrots, which are all in the Psittaciformes order, which are further split into three superfamilies.
